(About Eyelash Extensions)Do Eyelash Extensions Hurt?

Mar. 8th 20214 min read

Before trying eyelash extensions for the first time, it’s not unusual to wonder if the process will hurt. But … does it really hurt? NO! Eyelash extensions should NOT hurt.

RED FLAGS (DURING THE APPOINTMENT):

1. You feel pain on your eyelids.

2. You feel tugging or pulling of your eyelashes.

3. You feel burning in your eyes.

RED FLAGS (AFTER THE APPOINTMENT):

1. Your eyelids are swollen.

2. Your lash line feels itchy or heavy.

3. Your eyeballs hurt or become red.

If your lash artist says that these circumstances are normal, you need to get a new lash artist ASAP! Long story short, getting eyelash extensions should be a relaxing experience.

WHY YOUR EYELASH EXTENSIONS HURT (DURING THE APPOINTMENT):

1. IMPROPER TECHNIQUE

Lash extensions are individually attached one lash at a time to your natural lashes. When attached properly, the glue and lashes do not touch your skin at all! If they’re not attached properly, then it can hurt and irritate your eyelids.

2. LOW-QUALITY PRODUCTS

Just like any other product out there, there are high-quality products and low-quality products. Eyelash glue is an advanced formula that needs to be stored properly to maintain the efficacy of the product. If your lash artist isn’t investing in high-quality products, that could be the reason for the stinging and irritation you feel during the appointment.

WHY YOUR EYELASH EXTENSIONS HURT (AFTER THE APPOINTMENT):

1. IMPROPER ATTACHMENT

Improperly attached eyelash extensions can cause daily discomfort or even permanent lash damage. You should not feel poking, tugging or itching at the eyelids after your appointment. If your extensions are improperly attached, it can even pull your natural lashes off!

2. TOO MUCH WEIGHT

A good lash artist will protect your lashes by using extensions that your natural lashes can support. traction alopecia —a type of hair loss where the natural hair falls off when it’s under too much pressure. Eyelash extensions shouldn't feel like you’re wearing anything. They should feel light on your eyes.

3. TOO MUCH GLUE

Too much glue can cause a chemical burn in your eyes from the excessive fumes. If your eyes get bloodshot red or feel sore the day after your appointment, you should see an optometrist. If your eyes sting every time you get your eyelashes wet, then it’s a telltale sign that your lash artist used too much glue. When applied properly, eyelash extensions are completely waterproof.

4. ALLERGY TO LASH ADHESIVE

All lash adhesives contain an ingredient called cyanoacrylate. Some people develop allergies to this ingredient. If you’re one of those people, you may wake up with swollen eyelids the next morning. Have the extensions removed immediately!

Have an open conversation with your trusted lash artist to discuss everything you want to know beforehand. Be sure to also follow proper aftercare procedures to take better care of your new eyelash extensions!
